SUBJECT: ESTABLISH THE MONTH OF MAY, 1997 AS OLDER AMERICANS'MONTH AND
OLDER CALIFORNIANS'MONTH
SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDED ACTION
Establish the month of May, 1997 as Older Americans' and Older Californians' month.
II. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONBACKGROUND
Traditionally the President of the United States and the Governor of California have declared
May as Older Americans'Month and Older Californians'Month.
The Administration on Aging, Department of Health& Human Services has developed a
theme for this year entitled "Care Giving: Compassion in Action". This theme was selected
for a number of key reasons. The shift in America's demographics as the baby boomers age,
coupled with the fact that Americans are living longer than ever before, means caregiving
issues are having a tremendous impact on all of us.
Each day, more than 22 million Americans devote all or part of their day to assisting five
million older-family members, neighbors and friends who nee&'help in order to remain at home
and independent of our nations's formal system of care...nursing homes and other long-term
care facilities.
Caregivers include the spouses of older people, who are often elderly themselves, as well as
their siblings, children, grandchildren and other family members. Caregivers often have
multiple responsibilities. Seventy-five percent of caregivers are women, a quarter of whom
care for both older parents and children. It is no wonder caregivers need respite and support.
The demands and constraints inherent in caregiving can become overwhelming.
The Social Service Department for its Office on Aging would like to express appreciation and
gratitude to the over 145,000 persons age 60+ in the county and for their many contributions
to the growth and development of our nation, state, and county by recommending that the
month of May, 1997 be designated Older Americans' and Older Califor 'ans' Month.
