Resolution 97/244
WHEREAS, between 1989 and 1994, eighty-five students from the West Contra
Costa Unified School District were chosen to participate in the "First Wave" of the
Making Waves Foundation Educational Program; and
WHEREAS, the Foundation was developed with the idea that all children have
unique gifts and tremendous promise, however, some encounter barriers as they strive to
develop this potential; and
WHEREAS, the "First Wave" participants who were selected in 1989, consisted
of fifty fifth grade students from Nystrom Elementary and Peres Elementary, two schools
in the District with the poorest academic achievement; and
WHEREAS,the students who succeeded in the Making Waves Foundation
Educational Program had to be dedicated to rigorous academic training and support three
days per week throughout an academic year; and
WHEREAS, the initial graduating class of "First Wave" participants have done
extremely well in high school grade-point averages and SAT Performance levels,
indicating that over half of these graduating seniors will gain acceptance to a four year
college or university in the fall of 1997; and
WHEREAS, two members of the graduating class of"First Wave" participants
have applied for early admission to Stanford University and were accepted, an
achievement of scholastic distinction; and
WHEREAS, seventeen other members of the "First Wave" program have received
letters of acceptance from four-year colleges and universities, including the University of
California, Berkeley, UCLA, and the University of Michigan; and
Now, therefore be it resolved,that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County does hereby recognize, honor and commend the first graduating class of"First
Wave" participants in the Making Waves Foundation Educational Program for their
persistence and dedication to scholastic achievement; and
Be it further resolved, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
wishes these students the best of luck in their scholastic and personal careers.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on May 20, 1997,by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors present.
