On Tuesday, May 20, thousands of commuters, many of them for the first Bicycle Safety Projects time, will be riding their bicycles to work to celebrate Bike to Work Day. Breast Cancer Partnership/ Observed statewide, this annual event highlights bicycle commuting as a low-cost, Breast Cancer Early Detection Program(BCEDP) healthy, non-polluting, and traffic-reducing alternative to driving. Childhood Injury Prevention Project(CIPP) "We expect more than a thousand people who live or work in Contra Costa Food&Nutrition Policy County to turn out for Bike to Work Tuesday," says Sandy Sachs, coordinator of Consortium(FNPC Food Security Project the county's Go Bike! project. Go Bike! Sachs says that 17 "energizer stations" throughout Contra Costa County Bicycle Planning and Promotion Project will be on hand to encourage first-time bicyclists and invigorate seasoned bike Healthy Neighborhoods Project commuters during the Tuesday morning commute from 6:30 to 9:00 AM (please Lead Poisoning Prevention Project Nutrition and Physical Activity see attachment for map and locations of the energizer stations). Projects Public and Environmental Health Energizer stations are places where bicyclists can stop, get free food and Advisory Board(PEHAB( refreshments, and in some stations, even get their bicycles checked out for free by Tobacco Prevention Project Violence Prevention Projects experts from local bike shops. For bicyclists who do not have time to stop, canvas bike bags containing refreshments could be conveniently handed to them by energizer station volunteers as they ride by. Among those donating refreshments are Peet's Coffee, Odwalla Juice, Noah's Bagels, and Power Bars. Sachs urges Contra Costans who ride their bicycles to work on Tuesday to register, in order to become eligible for three prize drawings by the state, Bay Area region, and the county. Registering will also give planners and policy makers a solid sense of the size of the bicycle commute constituency. Registration forms are available by calling Go Bike! at 510-313-6817, Bay Area RIDES at 1-800- 755-POOL, or from the energizer stations on Bike to Work Day. "This is because public demand has upgraded Bike to Work Day to a weeklong event. But I recommend commuters ride their bicycles on Tuesday to take advantage of the energizer stations," he adds. According to Sachs, Contra Costa County and the cities of Brentwood, Clayton, Hercules, Pinole, Richmond, and San Ramon have proclaimed May 19-23 as Bike to Work Week. "We appreciate the support of local governments in encouraging residents to bike to work," he says.### r .
