The department's three first line units"are now thirty=ore years, seventeen years and
sixteen years old. The two second line units are thirty and thirty-one years old. The thirty -
plus year apparatus exceed the Contra Costa County requirements for fire apparatus
replacement.
Crockett-Carquinez is the only fire agency in Contra Costa County still regularly
transporting firefighters on the rear step of apparatus , this practice is contrary to NFPA
standard 1500 which requires that all personnel transported on apparatus be in a seat with
proper restraints, and inside a closed compartment. As the department has replaced
apparatus over the last thirteen years this standard has been met. However all older
apparatus does not meet this standard.

The department will have accumulated approximately $120,000 towards the purchase of a
second engine by the beginning of the next budget year that begins in July 1996. We will
still need in the area of$130,000 to complete the financing for this unit. With economies
in next years budget we hope to add $30,000 to our funds .
