Dear C;hair*;ersom Tht Sutter Countt,Board cf Supervisors, at their meeting on May 7, 1996, was made aware of the efforts of Dr. Balazs Imre Bodai, Chief of the Department of Surgery, Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Sacramento, California., to obtain Congressional approval of a 33-cent commemorative postage stamp to raise funds for breast cancer research. The proposed stamp would be an optional first-class stamp, with the additional one cent donated to breast cancer research. We are particularly impressed with the fact that, in effect, the donation would be voluntary. Dr. Bodai's efforts were brought to our attention by one of his patients,Mercy Davidchik, who is a local resident and breast cancer survivor. Ale all personally know of someone, whether a family member, friend, or acquaintance, who has been atfected by breast cancer. According to Dr. Bodai, breast cancer is a disease that is becoming epidemic, with one woman in eight now being at risk. He estimates that approximately 2.3 million women in the United States alope currently have breast cancer, with the disease claiming more than 46,000 lives every year. He believes a cure for this devastating disease can be found through research. The additional one cent generated by the optional 33-cent stamp would go directly toward research conducted by the National Cancer Institute, providing an estimated $30 million per year. 'The Sutter County Board of Supervisors strongly supports Dr. Bodai's efforts to raise funds for breast cancer research. We are aware that our Congressman, Vic Fazio, joined by Congressmen Doolittle and Matsui, have introduced HR 3401 to allow for this postage stamp. We would request that you join us in supporting the campaign for HR 3 40 1, which would make the optional 33-cent postage stamp possible.
