WHEREAS, Dr. Peter Kunkel has practiced medicine in Contra Costa County since 1954 and has worked
tirelessly to relieve suffering and to reduce disability and death from heart disease, stroke, and related
disorders; and
WHEREAS, in 1958 and 1960, Dr. Kunkel served as Chief of Medicine at Mt. Diablo Hospital; and in 1965,
as Chief of Staff and has continually earned the esteem and respect of his fellow physicians for his expertise
in cardiology as well as his gentle warmth and caring; and
WHEREAS, from 1959 to 1970, Dr. Kunkel served on the Board of Directors of the American Heart
Association in Contra Costa County and further served as President in 1962-63 as well as Chairman at various
intervals of a number of committees including Rehabilitation, Professional Services, and Coronary Care Unit;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Kunkel is widely regarded as a teacher of considerable excellence and has been called upon
to direct and/or serve on the faculty of numerous postgraduate courses for physicians both under the auspices
of the American Heart Association and Mt. Diablo Hospital; and
WHEREAS, since 1966, Dr. Kunkel has served as Chairman of the Cardiac Care Unit Committee at Mt. Diablo
Hospital and has additionally served as Director of the Cardiac Care Unit since its opening in May, 1968; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Kunkel established the exercise laboratory at Mt. Diablo Hospital in 1970 and was involved
in establishing the Intensive Care Unit and was instrumental in establishing the Cardiac Care Unit; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Kunkel has earned the admiration and respect of countless nurses through his leadership in
developing the curriculum and coordination of the facultyfor the annual CCU Nurses' Training Course at Mt.
Diablo Hospital; and
WHEREAS, on June 17, the Contra Costa County Chapter of the American Heart Association will recognize
Dr. Peter Kunkel as a "Heart of Gold" recipient at a dinner paying tribute to his years of devoted service to
the American Heart Association, his patients, and the doctors and nurses he has worked with over a long and
continuing career of distinction.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares June 17, 1993, as DR. PETER
KUNKEL DAY in Contra Costa County and gratefully acknowledges his devotion and contributions to
improving the quality of life and health in the county.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON June 15, 1993, by a unanimous vote of the Board members present.
