IN THE MATTER OF PROCLAIMING] RESOLUTION NO. 96/218
THE WEEK OF MAY 26, 1996 TO ]
JUNE 1, 1996 AS ELDER ABUSE ]
PREVENTION WEEK IN CONTRA ]
COSTA COUNTY ]
WHEREAS, May has been designated as OLDER AMERICANS MONTH, and is
dedicated to actions supporting the well being of our seniors; and,
WHEREAS, the Subcommittee on Health and Long-Term Care of the Select Committee on
Aging of the United States House of Representatives in 1990 estimated that only one in
fourteen incidents of elder abuse is actually reported; and the State of California has estimated a
26.5% increase in reports of elder or dependent abuse totaling 39,000 cases; and
WHEREAS, in 1994, Contra Costa County has had 465 reports to the County Health and
Social Services Departments and another 314 ombudsman reports; however, the statistics show
that only one person in fourteen reports their abuse; and,
WHEREAS, the number of persons over the age of 60 has grown 68% in the past 25 years and
is expected to grow another 22% in the next 25 years, there is a need for any person to report
and prevent incidents of elder abuse.;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County does proclaim the week of May 26- June 1, 1996 as
EIDER ABUSE PREVENTION WEEK
PASSED by vote of the Board members present on this 21st day of May, 1996.
