SUBJECT: Departmental Name Change
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)h BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. Recommended Action:
Request the Board of Supervisors approve a title change for the Data Processing Services
Division of the County Administrator's Office to the Department of Information Technology,
retitle the job classifications of Director of Data Processing Services to Director of Information
Technology; Deputy Director of Data Processing Services, Operations to Deputy Director of
Information Technology, Operations; and the Deputy Director of Data Processing Services,
Communications, to Deputy Director of Information Technology, Communications.
The changes in the working titles of the exempt classes of Director of Data Processing Services to
Director of Information Technology and Deputy Director of Data Processing Services,
Communications, to Deputy Director of Information Technology, Communications, shall not
change their official titles or exempt status as set forth in County Ordinance Code section
33-5.359.
II. Fiscal Impact: None.
III. Reasons for Recommendation:
The mission of Data Processing Services has changed dramatically over the past 10 years, and the
name of an organization should closely align itself with the actual function of that organization.
This request for a departmental name change is just one of several steps the department is
embarking on to change both its internal attitude, and its customers' attitudes, about the primary
focus and mission of the department, which today is much broader than"data processing."

IV. Background:
In 1986, the Data Processing Services Division of the County Administrator's Office provided
centralized data processing services to County departments. In 1996, this same organization
provides business and consulting services to all County departments and managers in the
application of information technology, which includes systems integration for voice, video and
data, network services, Internet services, large and small scale computing services, integration of
a variety of types of information technology methodologies, and business consulting. Many other
American business organizations, the State of California, and California Counties have retitled
their technology departments to better fit the description of their mission. The Director of Data
Processing Services is following the example of these businesses and government entities.
