FROM: INTERNAL OPERATIONS COMMITTEEg s Costa
County
DATE: May 6, 1996
SUBJECT. REPORT ON FUNDING REQUEST FROM ADVOCATES FOR BIRD
CONSERVATION
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. APPROVE the request from Advocates for Bird Conservation for a grant in the
amount of$10,000 for the 1995-96 fiscal year for the purposes outlined in the
attached grant application.
2, REMOVE this item as a referral to the 1996 Internal Operations Committee.
BACKGROUND:
On December 19, 1995, the Board of Supervisors referred to our Committee the
request from Advocates for Bird Conservation for $10,000 from the Keller Canyon
Landfill Mitigation fund to further their avian sciences education program in the
schools in East County and to assist in preparing other funding applications.
Our Committee met with Al McNabney and Laurella Desborough from Advocates for
Bird Conservation on May 6, 1996, and reviewed their application with them. A copy
of their application is attached to our Committee report.
We are advised that funding is available for this purpose. The project seems a
worthy and needed one and is consistent with the purposes for which the Keller
Canyon Landfill Mitigation funds can be spent.
We are, therefore, recommending that the Board allocate $10,000 for this purpose
for the 1995-96 fiscal year.
