HIS DISTINGUISHED AND ]
COMMITTED SERVICE TO CONTRA]

WHEREAS,THE HONORABLE JUDGE EDWARD L.MERRIU has been a Superior Court Judge of
Contra Costa County for the past 14 years. Judge Merrill has had many leadership roles while on the bench
including serving as Presiding Juvenile Judge from 1985 through 1987 and the Presiding Superior Court Judge in
1989;and,
WHEREAS,JUDGE EDWARD L. MERRILL has been a long time Contra Costa County resident who has
served on many education and community boards for the benefit of the residents of the San Ramon Valley including
serving on the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees and the San Ramon Valley Chamber of
Commerce;and,
WHEREAS,JUDGE EDWARD L.MERRILL'S legal career as an attorney spanned 29 years with his practice
beginning in Danville with partners Johnson and Thiessen. Judge Merrill became a partner of the firm Merrill,
Thiessen and Gagen. Professional organizations that Judge Merrill has been involved with are the California Judges
Association,the American Bar Association,the Association of Trial Lawyers of America,the California Trial
Lawyers Association and the various local bar associations who awarded him the Trial Judge of the Year in 1989;
and,
WHEREAS,JUDGE EDWARD L. MERRIL .lives in the Alhambra Valley with his wife, Gladys, and enjoys
visits from his two sons, Casey and Charlie;
NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does honor,
recognize and commend
JUDGE EDWARD L. MERRILL
for his outstanding service to the citizens of Contra Costa County.
PASSED by vote of the Board members present on this 14th day of May, 1996.
