Walker, M.D. , Health Services Director x r Costa County DATE: April 2 , 1996 f rJsr9 couK�cT SUBJECT: County Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Programs SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION Accept this report on the job classifications covered under bloodborne pathogens safety programs . FINANCIAL IMPACT None. ( It should be noted though that each position under the program costs the Department approximately $120 for vaccine and training time. ) BACKGROUND _ A. On July 11, 1995, Health Services and Risk Management presented to the Board information regarding bloodborne pathogens safety programs in the County. Local 512 requested Probation Supervisors who work outside Juvenile Hall and Orin Allen Boys ' Ranch be included in the Probation Department' s policy. The Board was provided with a partial list of covered classifications that showed what Probation classifications were covered along with positions in a few other departments . The Board requested a review of other employee classifications for possible inclusion under a bloodborne pathogens safety program. B. In consultation with the Departments and the CAL OSHA Medical Unit, a review of all classifications was done by Health Services and Risk Management. Changes made were to include some senior managers (such as a Fire Chief) and classifications where titles changed. The list was distributed by Human Resources to the unions for their review, and they were asked to contact Risk Management if they had questions . (January 24 , 1996 letter attached. ) No questions or comments were received. C. To ensure all classifications are covered, Departments will annually review exposed classes for inclusion. Risk Management and Health Services will continue to provide safety information to employees who are not included in the programs . Attached for your review is a list of departments which have no covered classifications and a second list of covered classifications by department. Amendments or deletions to the second list have been noted by underlining additions and striking through deletions. Also, an explanation for the addition or deletion has been noted. On January 24, 1996, a letter was sent to all unions requesting that if they had any questions concerning the County's Bloodborne Pathogens Program and the covered classifications, they refer them to Larry Moss, Safety Officer in Risk Management, by February 7, 1996.
