SUBJECT: County Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Programs
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
Accept this report on the job classifications covered under bloodborne
pathogens safety programs .
FINANCIAL IMPACT
None. ( It should be noted though that each position under the program costs
the Department approximately $120 for vaccine and training time. )
BACKGROUND _
A. On July 11, 1995, Health Services and Risk Management presented to the
Board information regarding bloodborne pathogens safety programs in the
County. Local 512 requested Probation Supervisors who work outside Juvenile
Hall and Orin Allen Boys ' Ranch be included in the Probation Department' s
policy. The Board was provided with a partial list of covered
classifications that showed what Probation classifications were covered along
with positions in a few other departments . The Board requested a review of
other employee classifications for possible inclusion under a bloodborne
pathogens safety program.
B. In consultation with the Departments and the CAL OSHA Medical Unit, a
review of all classifications was done by Health Services and Risk
Management. Changes made were to include some senior managers (such as a
Fire Chief) and classifications where titles changed. The list was
distributed by Human Resources to the unions for their review, and they were
asked to contact Risk Management if they had questions . (January 24 , 1996
letter attached. ) No questions or comments were received.
C. To ensure all classifications are covered, Departments will annually
review exposed classes for inclusion. Risk Management and Health Services
will continue to provide safety information to employees who are not included
in the programs .
