NEMETH 4037 Happy Valley Road, Lafayette, CA 94549 N PII'1Rp 2 0 1996 CLERK BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CONTRA COSTA CO. March 18, 1996 RMIAD Mr. Jeff Smith, Chairman Contra Costa County Board of Supenisors 651 Pine Street, Room 106 Martinez, CA 94553 SUPERVISOR Wit- Dear i .Dear Mr. Smith, I am the first to admit that I am usually one of the apathetic silent majority. For me, work and family is a full time affair and I usually just hope that our elected or appointed officials are competent enough to make my community safe, keep the roads drivable, water and electricity available at reasonable rates and have my garbage removed without too much fuss. But, of all things,,this last item is turning me into a political extremist! Mr. Smith; I do-not have the hill_ story yet as to who turned my waste collection day into a nightmare, but I.assure youthat I WILL CET THE FULL STORY and I will spare no expense or time to make sure they never hold a position of authority in this county again! I am of course referring to the new collection bins, foisted of on us by our elected officials in the name of efficiency. My new waste collection bin has an empty weight of slightly over forty pounds (I weighed it). Put in there two compactor bags of waste and some miscellaneous garbage and the weig[it.is over cine li►.i,ndred pou-nuns. I am fifty years old, in good physical shape, but I can't lift the damned things. Which of course does not nmtter, since they are too tall to fit into any car's trunk or station wagon. So, now I have to drag the damned things up..a fairly long and slopping driveway on wheels with no bearings, handles that are off to the side so you can't pull from the center. And, as a,final malsbchiMc touch, the handles sport sharp protuberances,..not.unlike medieval battle maces.' The recycling bin follows right along with the waste bin design philosophy. And just to complete this fiasco, they both leak on a rainy day so that even if the collection crew closes the top (which.they haven't . EDWIN A. NEMETH 4037 Happy Valley Road, Lafayette, CA 94549 so far) I get to drag small, but very polluted, ponds back down the driveway. I notice that many of my fellow citizens, being smarter than me, have given up this unequal struggle and just leave the bins by the roadside all week. Therefore this spring, along with the budding daffodils and the crocuses, we find groves upon groves of waste bins lining the streets. How scenic! Mr. Smith, the decision to approve these monsters by our public servants could have come about in only two ways: Money changing hands or incompetence. Either way, these people no longer deserve our trust nor the right to remain in office. I would appreciate you sharing this letter with the full Board of Supervisors.
