Ignacio Zaragoza dd, on Way S, 1862, at the City of 1te6Ca, engage itse f in fierce
combat with the FrenchArrny; and
lKMP,EAS, the Soldiers of We*o exhi6ited such bravery, heroism and
dedicated defense of their country that they defeated the invading army of France; and
UXtEW�EAS, this defeat 6rought about the decline of the French Army and led
to its ultimate defeat on,buy 19, 1867; and
UER�E,AS, this heroic action 6y the Mexican Army 6rought to an end the
plans of the invading army to conquer the entireAmertcan continent thereby chaing the
course of history.
NO`W, WE%EFOW, BE IT 4MSOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of
Contra Costa County does here6y proclaim Sunday, Kay S, 1996, as "Cinco de Wayo .
Day" in Contra Costa County to honor and recognize the courage of the We*an
people and the We.Vcan Nationa(Army as displayed 6y their valiant defense of their
country;
BEIT Fv 'r lER XSOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors invites the
citizens of Contra Costa County to join in the observance and cele6ration of Cinco de
Mayo.
T,ISSED 6y unanimous vote of the Board Wem6ers present on this 23rd(Day of April
1996.
