County DATE: March 26, 1996 SUBJECT: Resolution Proclaiming "National Infant Immunization Week" and "Toddler Immunization Month" SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: ADOPT the attached resolution proclaiming the week of April 21-27 as "National Infant Immunization Week" and the month of May as "Toddler Immunization Month." BACKGROUND: A recent survey indicates that 40% of California children are not up-to-date with their immunizations by two years of age. Childhood diseases such as polio, measles, diphtheria, mumps and others still pose a threat to non-immunized children, and complications of these diseases are often devastating. During the month of May, area physicians will be making special efforts to encourage parents to bring their young children in for needed immunizations. The Contra Costa County Health Services Department Public Health division holds daily immunization clinics where toddlers can receive free immunizations. FISCAL IMPACT: None. Contact Person: Dottie Langthorn,313-6767 p q CC: Health Services Administration ATTESTED Public Health Administration PHIL BATCHELOR, GLERK OF THE OARD OF SUPERVISORS AND COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR BY �jl DEPUTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS • OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY IN THE MATTER OF PROMOTING RESOL UTION NO. 96/14 8 The Week of April 21-27 as "National Infant Immunization Week" and The Month of May as: "Toddler Immunization Month" WHEREAS recent California surveys indicate 40%of California children are not up-to-date with their immunizations by two years of age; and WHEREAS the childhood diseases of polio, measles, diphtheria, tetanus,pertussis, mumps, rubella and Hib meningitis still pose a threat to unimmunized children, and complications of these diseases are often devastating to both patients and their families; and WHEREAS virtually all children attending schools and licensed day care centers in Contra Costa County are protected by these immunizations because schools and centers enforce the California School Immunization Law; and WHEREAS the basic series of immunizations against childhood diseases should be completed before a child's second birthday; and WHEREAS the Contra Costa County Health Services Department, Public Health.will hold daily immunization clinics where toddlers can receive free immunizations; and WHEREAS private physicians throughout the county also will be making special efforts to encourage parents to bring their young children in for needed immunizations during May; NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED BY THE CONTRA COSTA COUNTY.
