What: Once a year the Contra Costa County Substance Abuse Advisory Board acknowledges both volunteer and non-volunteer individuals and groups that have significantly contributed towards reducing substance abuse in our communities. This year's Awards honor the following people and groups: Individual Volunteer Award - Tom Aswad of Walnut Creek serves on five substance abuse planning boards, facilitates care of recovering addicts and alcoholics, has successfully advocated to introduce Narcotic's Anonymous in the County Jails, serves as coordinator and co-chair of the Central County Partnership for a Drug and Alcohol Free Contra Costa County, and is a highly esteemed role model and mentor to youth in the area of substance abuse prevention and education. Group Volunteer Award-After the loss of David Buffington,a death related to alcohol sales to minors, his mother and friends asked themselves: Why did it happen? What could have been done to stop it?Their decision,to open a safe and sober dance club for teenagers every Saturday night. Club 21 was founded by a partnership between Martinez youth and the Martinez Community Against Substance Abuse(CASA).The young people named the club in memory of their friend-21 was David's Alhambra High School football jersey number. Since the club opened in March 1995, approximately 5,000 young people have attended. This group of committed volunteers-adults,young adults, and youth have clearly resolved a community need creatively and effectively. Individual Non-Volunteer Award-David Herrington works for the California Department of Corrections and the Bay Area Services Network in Contra Costa County. David has helped move many parolee's into substance abuse treatment, helped them with their addiction, and exhibits a commitment to serve this population that goes beyond his assigned responsibilities-allowing people to page him 24 hours a day if they need support to deal with their addiction; visiting clients at the residential treatment programs; and educating other providers about how treatment can help parolees stay out of the criminal justice system. i Group Non-Volunteer Award -For ten years Ujima Family Recovery Services has made a significant contribution towards combating substance abuse in disadvantaged pregnant and parenting women, children, and families in Contra Costa County.Ujima's services have been designated exemplary perinatal programs for the State of California by the Department of alcohol and Drug Programs.Ujima began in 1986, a grass roots effort of concerned citizens who wanted to address the lack of specialized substance abuse treatment programs for women and children, particularly low-income and homeless women severely affected by alcoholism and drug addiction. "Ujima" means collective work and responsibility, one of the values commemorated in the African-American Celebration of Kwanzaa-a name that fits the value and ideal of the program, its providers, clients, and recovering families and communities it serves.
