Animal Services Department 1996 Performance Report .

Animal Services Department
1996 Performance Report Summary
The Animal Services Department was established in 1979. We contract
with 17 cities and serve the entire County with the exception of the city of
Antioch.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• The prevention of animal-related injury and disease.
• To encourage responsible pet-ownership and the humane -
treatment of animals.
• To reduce the number of animals that are euthanized by the
County.

COMPARISON WITH OTHER AGENCIES
Consistently ranked as one of the highest producing agencies in
California.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Since the 1981-1982 fiscal year, the Department has reduced its
dependence on the County General Fund by over 60% while experiencing
an increase in the population served of over 25%. From 1981 to 1995, the
consumer price index rose 67.7%. Our net budget was reduced from
$190311840 (65.02%) to $622,085 ((17.29%).
