"EMPLOY AN OLDER WORKER WEEK"
SPECIFIC REQUEST($)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I . RECOMMENDED ACTION
Declare the week .of March 10-16, 1996, as "EMPLOY AN OLDER
WORKER WEEK" in Contra Costa County, to remind the business
community that older workers are one of our community' s most
valuable resources, and to encourage all businesses in the
county to give equal opportunity to individuals age 55 or
older when filling job openings .
Until recently, many older workers were forced to retire and
live a sedentary life . Today, an increasingly healthy and
skilled senior community is available as a valuable pool of
potential employees . During Employ an Older Worker Week, the
County is asked to urge employers to hire older workers and
to publicize this through the press .
II . FINANCIAL IMPACT
None
III . REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONIBACKGROUND
It is essential that employers know of the availability of
an untapped pool of mature workers who want to work and who
take pride in their job performance . ! Contrary to the myth
that older workers are slow learners ;who are unable to keep
pace in today' s workplace, employers have discovered that
older workers are reliable, stable employees who bring to
the job a strong work ethic and a high el of employer
loyalty.

SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I . RECOMMMMATION
Proclaim March 10 through March 16 as HIRE THE OLDER WORKER in
Contra Costa County by encouraging all corporate and business
leaders in our communities to recruit and employ workers from an
experienced and reliable workforce pool of solid work ethic
candidates eager to meet employers needs.
II . FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
III . REASONS) FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND:
Wheras, Governor Pete Wilson has proclaimed March 10-16, 1996 as
HIRE THE OLDER WORKER WEEK in California; and in collaboration
with the State Employment Development Department (EDD) , -the Area
Office on Aging (AAA) , and the Private Industry Council (PIC)
promote the hiring of older workers who are 55 or older:
It is important that the corporate and business community know
that one in every five Americans is age 40 or older. By the year
2010, there will be approximately 18.6 million older citizens in
California, constituting nearly 44% of younger workers entering
the job market is diminishing. Senior workers are an excellent
source of dedicated workers.
