QU s 45th Anniversary )
WHEREAS, since the creation of the Pleasant Hill Recreation Council in 1949, Pleasant Hill has
been working to meet the needs of its residents' recreational needs; and
WHEREAS, in January 1951, after a petition was presented to the County Planning Commission
to place a proposed tax-supported district on the ballot, the voters approved the Pleasant Hill
Park, Recreation & Parkway District, which became the Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park
District (PHR&PD) in 1954; and
WHEREAS, today, PHR&PD is governed by an elected Board of Directors and maintains and
operates 269 acres of open space, including 12 park sites and several cooperative facilities with
the school district, and 60,000 square feet of structures, including three community pools; and
WHEREAS, 2,100 types of programs and activities especially designed for preschool, youth,
teens, adults, and seniors are currently offered by the District; and
WHEREAS, every year, approximately 100,000 people participate in PHR&PD programs,
volunteer, or visit the facilities; and
WHEREAS, the Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District is a vital community resource, which
citizens rely upon for physical activity, social interaction, and personal education; and
WHEREAS, we highly commend the excellent job the District Board of Directors, the General
Manager & the District staff, and the community volunteers do each year to provide quality
programs and services to the citizens of Pleasant Hill and Contra Costa County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors honors the PLEASANT
HILL RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT on the occasion of its 45th anniversary and
wishes it continued success.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON March 12, 1996, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
