SUBJECT: STAFFING OF THE FISH AND WILDLIFE COMMITTEE
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
REFER to the Internal Operations Committee the question of how staff will be
provided to the Fish and Wildlife Committee.
BACKGROUND:
On October 24, 1995, the Board of Supervisors made the remaining appointments
to the restructured Fish and Wildlife Committee. The assumption was that the
Sheriff would be staffing the Committee. However, the Sheriff has declined to staff
the Committee, leaving the Fish and Wildlife Committee at this time with no staffing.
The Internal Operations Committee would like to discuss the feasibility of keeping
staffing with the Community Development Department, which has traditionally staffed
the Fish and Wildlife Committee.

BACKGROUND:
In December, 1994 the Board of Supervisors reconstituted the Fish and Wildlife
Committee. The Committee consists of nine members, one appointed by each member
of the Board of Supervisors and four at-large members nominated by the Internal
Operations Committee.
On August 7, 1995, our Committee indicated that we wanted to interview all of the
applicants for the Fish and Wildlife Committee.
The applicants were all invited to be interviewed on October 16, 1995. We interviewed
six applicants at that time and then talked on the telephone with two additional applicants
who were unable to be present for the interview but were most anxious to be considered
for the vacant positions.
Based on our interviews, as has so often been the case with other advisory boards, we
were tremendously impressed with the quality of the applicants, in terms of their education,
background, skills and interest in the general subject matter of fish and wildlife. We have
agreed to recommend the above noted four individuals, although we hope that all of the
applicants will continue to be interested in the work of the Committee and will make
themselves available for future appointments as vacancies occur.
