Black History Month is a time for honoring the contributions of African Americans who have come before us and those who are creating the historical legacy of future generations . This month recognizes African Americans who have shaped this nation with their courage, their dreams, and their love. IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the month of February 1996 is PROCLAIMED "Black History Month in Contra Costa County" . WHEREAS African Americans helped found the Nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways as servants, slaves, industrial workers, teachers, reformers, soldiers and pioneers; and WHEREAS African Americans played and continue to play a critical economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of our Nation's life by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working in and outside of the home; and WHEREAS African Americans served as early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social movement, not only to secure their own right to vote and be citizens and be provided equal opportunity, but also in the emancipation movement, the industrial labor union movement, and the civil rights movement; and WHEREAS African Americans in Contra Costa County have contributed to its development and progress in various roles and levels of responsibility; and WHEREAS despite these contributions, the role of African Americans in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in the body of American history: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, California, hereby PROCLAIM the month of February 1996 as "Black History Month" in Contra Costa County. PASSED on February 6, 1996 by unanimous vote of the Board members present. I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of a resolution on the minutes of this Board of Supervisors on the aforesaid date.
