Gayle Bishop, Chairperson Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors 651 Pine Street Martinez, CA 94553 Re: Keller Canyon Landfill Dear Supervisor Bishop: This letter is to follow up on the Board of Supervisors' ineeting of May 116, 1995 concerning the Board's suggested actions for addressing concerns regarding Keller Canyon Landfill's receipt of special wastes. We do want to be proactive in fostering a good neighbor relationship with the communities of Pittsburg and Bay Point(;, and we think a workshop to get the facts out is the best place to start in this effort. Because we are in compliance with applicable permits for receipt of special wastes(including special wastes from out-of-county sources) and because we have continuing commitments and contractual relationships for obtaining these wastes, we are unable to suspend receiving special wastes generated by out-of-county sources. However, we whole-heartedly agree that far too much rnisinfopnwtion has been prevalent in the community concerning the facility's lawful receipt of special wastes, and we fully support having a workshop to educate the community regarding the true facts of special waste disposal. Moreover, we were encouraged by the City of Pittsburg's letter indicating its willingness to meet with us to work on ways to resolve our differences, and we have already taken steps to facilitate a discussion between the City of Pittsburg and, ourselves in furtherance of this effort. We are hopeful that increased levels of public education, site tours of the landfill, and community awareness will foster a better neighboring relationship between the site and nearby comniunities. I look forward to our increased involvement with the local residents and nearby communities. Very true vcours, Kerr Etheling-to' K cc: Dennis P. penton, BFI Mi.
