SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION TO ACCEPT LATIN MUSIC GRANT
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Authorize the County Librarian to accept Musica Para Todos Latin grant awarded the Concord branch by
Columbia House Club Musica Latina and the American Library Association, National REFORMA chapter.The
intent of the Musica Para Todos program is to cultivate a better understanding of Latin music, its diversity
and its origins. Contra Costa County Library was one of 12 libraries selected nationwide, based on its ability
to fulfill the program criteria and to serve a substantial Hispanic population.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
No matching funds are required. The Library's contribution will include staff time for setting up the
equipment, publicizing the program and providing programming around the theme of Latin music.
BACKGROUND:
The Concord branch serves a large Hispanic population. The 1990 census indicates that there are 12,765
Hispanics or 11.5% of the total population of over 111,000. During the period of 1980 to 1990, the growth
rate of the Hispanic population was 72%, making it the fastest growing ethnic group in the city. Last year,
Concord library received a federal grant of$5,000 to purchase materials targeting the Spanish-speaking new
immigrants and to publicize these materials to the Spanish-speaking new immigrant community. A Fiesta
was held in November with an attendance of over 150 people. The Musica Para Todos Latin music grant
will enhance the materials available to the Hispanic community and will provide additional programming
designed to attract the Hispanic community to the library and to provide services relevant to their lives and
interests. The award will provide:
O 100 Latin music CDs selected from the Columbia House Club Musica Latina repertoire, covering the
three main genres of Latin music: Latin Pop, Tropical & Salsa, and Mexican & Tejano
O State-of-the-art SONY CD player (holds 100 Cds)
O 2 wireless headphones
O 1 bilingual poster map highlighting the origins of Latin music and its classification into three main
genres
