W&REAS, the,,Arationa(Ifero of the (Philippines, Dr. dose 1jz' al; was born on the 19th of
,dune in 1861, in Kalam6a, (Phdippines;and
41f I&REAS, (Dr. R,izal was considered to rank among the world's geniuses — he was an
anthropologist, botanist, businessman, economist, educator, engineer,farmer, historian, horticulturist,
linguist, mathematician, novelist, naturaCtst, painter, physician, poet, philosopher, psychologist,
sculptor, sociologist, and zoologist, among many things, but more than these, he was a patriot, hero,
and martyr, and
%V.HtEWXAS, white in Europe during the late 1880's, Dr. Wzal wrote novels and articles
calring for reforms in government and defending the rights of the Filipinos to a bettergovernment and
the recognition and respect for their human rights,freedom andjustice;and

campaign for reforms organizing the Liga Filipino to unite the Tdipinos. On 9uly 6, 1892, he was
impri'sonedfor unjustifia6le reasons and then banished. Yle was held responsi6le for the outbreak of
the(Philippine 1pvolution on August 23, 1896, and returned to prison. After a mock trial dy military
court, he was sentenced to death by a firing squad and fired as a martyr to the cause of human rights
andfreedom on December 30, 1896; '
