The purpose of California Bike Commute 1995 is to celebrate the benefits of bicycle commuting on a single day, statewide, to encourage the regular use of bicycles for transportation. Bicycle transportation is, of course, non-polluting and saves energy, but it also adds to the "quality of life" by reducing traffic noise and congestion along with promoting physical fitness. The California Bicycle Coalition and the American Lung Association of California have worked with many groups and individuals in over fifty California communities to promote the California Bike Commute as a part of the Lung Association's "Clean Air Week" and"National Bike Month." On May 4th, the mayors of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland will lead off the day by riding to work. Sacramento will host a noontime bicycle parade to the Capitol, along with an organized ride home along the American River Bike Trail. I urge you to join our celebration of bicycle commuting in your community. If you have any questions about how to participate in the organized activities, you may also call the statewide information number: 1-800-679-BIKE (2453), or Tom Higgins of my Capitol staff at : 916/445-3952. Enclosed is a copy of SCR 25 which proclaims Thursday, May 4th as California Bike Commute Day. Also enclosed is a list of communities and individuals who have expressed their support for this effort.
