County DATE: May 10, 1995 CONTRIBUTION TO HOME DELIVERED MEALS PROGRAM SUBJECT: SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDATION Accept a donation of $20, 000 from Senior Home Delivered Meals of Contra Costa Inc. for the County Home Delivered Meals Program located in the Department of Health Services - Public Health Division. These funds were raised specifically to assist the County Home Delivered Meals Program in purchasing meals and meal delivery equipment to maintain or expand meal delivery services to the County's homebound elderly. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: This $20, 000 contribution allows the County Home Delivered Meals Program to deliver approximately 13, 300 additional meals to the residences of the county's homebound elderly this fiscal year, or up to 53 additional meals each day. III. BACKGROUND: The County Home Delivered Meals Program is the largest program of its kind in Contra Costa County, delivering nearly 550 hot nutritious daily meals to the residences of homebound elders. The program has not received a significant government funding increase in nearly nine years, yet has expanded services over 50% during that same period. Including this contribution, Senior Home Delivered Meals of Contra Costa, Inc. has contributed $82, 000 to the County Home Delivered Meals Program since 1991. This non-profit charitable organization was formed in 1990 by a coalition of public and private non-profit agencies and advisory councils to raise charitable contribution for the purchase of additional meals and meal delivery equipment to serve our county's homebound elders through the County Home Delivered Meals Program. Participating organizations are: the County Social Services Department's Office on Aging; the County Health Services Department's Senior Nutrition Program; the County Advisory Council on Aging; the Senior Nutrition Program Advisory Council; Family and Community Services Inc. ; United Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations, Inc. ; and West County Meals on Wheels, Inc.
