CELEBRATION OF CANCER SURVNORS DAY ON ]

RECOMMENDED BY SUPERVISOR GAYLE BISHOP ) RESOLUTION NO. 95/219
WHEREAS, The Wellness Community (TVVC) is, primarily and uniquely, a community — a
place where people with cancer can come together to build support groups and extended
families that will help them to improve the quality of their lives and fight more effectively for
recovery. TWC offers a wide range of support groups facilitated by licensed
psychotherapists, workshops, training sessions and social events for cancer patients and
their loved ones, provided in a comfortable, homelike setting.
WHEREAS, The Wellness Community was founded on the belief that cancer patients who
fight for recovery, with hope, support and companionship, can improve their quality of life,
and may increase the possibility of their recovery. Numerous studies indicate that
emotional support can lessen pain and depression, shorten hospital stays, reduce
treatment costs, and improve survival ratios.
WHEREAS, The Wellness Community program was founded in. 1982 by Harold H.
Benjamin; who developed the "patient active" concept after witnessing his wife's successful
bout with breast cancer. TWC has served Contra Costa County since 1990 and received
more than 27,000 visits.
WHEREAS, The Wellness Community offers FREE psychosocial support to cancer patients
and their loved ones, that is in addition to, and in support of, conventional medical
treatment.
WHEREAS, The Wellness Community sends cancer victors into the community to speak
and spread the message that cancer is not a death sentence and that everyone needs to
have regular medical checkups.
WHEREAS, The Wellness Community received 800 visits with over 1,600 hours of service
each month from cancer patients and their families in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
does hereby pay tribute to The Wellness Community on its celebration of Cancer Survivors
Day in Contra Costa County on June 4, 1995.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of those Supervisors present on May 23,
1995.
