Dear Members of the Board of Supervisors:
Thank you for providing usa copy of your resolution number 941639 concerning
Amtrak's proposed.elimination of the Capitol Corridor service. Mr. Downs has
asked that I respond on his behalf.
We regret having to consider reductions in service on the Capitol Corridor.
However, it is clear that if we do not take steps to reduce our costs, the federal
government will do it for us. Our hope is that by identifying operational
efficiencies we can continue to provide some level of service.
I am pleased to advise, however, that we have reached agreement with Caltrans
that willallow us to continue operating the existing Capitol Corridor trains
through September 1995. We are continuing discussions on possible funding
alternatives and productivity improvements to maintain the service beyond this
date. It is our sincere hope that over time ridership and revenues will grow and
we will be eventually able to expand service..
Thank you for your interest and support of rail passenger service.
Yours trul ,
