HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04041995 - 1.19 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA f i In the Matter of Proclaiming ) April, 1995 as Earthquake ) RESOLUTION NO. 95/144 Preparedness Month ) WHEREAS, the January 17, 1995 earthquake that struck Kobe, Japan was a solemn reminder that California is also vulnerable to such devastating seismic activity; and WHEREAS, many residents of Southern California are still in the process of rebuilding their homes, businesses and lives in the aftermath of the January 1994 Northridge earthquake; and WHEREAS, seismologists have warned that a major earthquake on the Hayward Fault, which traverses the western part of Contra Costa County, could occur at any time and poses one of the greatest natural disaster threats in the nation in terms of the potential deaths, injuries and property damage; and WHEREAS, some of the personal injuries and property damage which result from earthquakes can be substantially reduced through mitigation measures taken in advance; and WHEREAS, the Governor of California has proclaimed April 1995 as Earthquake Preparedness Month, IT IS HEREBY BY THIS BOARD RESOLVED that the month of April is proclaimed as Earthquake Preparedness Month in Contra Costa County and all county residents are encouraged to develop emergency plans for themselves and their families and to store food, water, flashlights, portable radios, batteries, first aid supplies and other items which will be needed to cope with the aftermath of a major earthquake.
