SUBJECT: AUTHORIZING LETTER TO.-) SENATOR DIANNE FEINSTEIN SUPPORTING THE
CONTINUED BAN ON MILIITARY-STYLE ASSAULT WEAPONS
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Chair, Board of Supervisors to forward to
Senator Dianne Feinstein a letter opposing all efforts to overturn
the ban on the future sale, manufacture or transfer of 19 military-
style assault weapons, their copycat models and ammunition feeding
devices that hold more than 10 rounds .
BACKGROUND:
Attached is a memo from CSAC quoting a letter from Senator
Feinstein asking for the support of elected officials to continue
the ban on military-style assault weapons and oppose any efforts to
overturn that ban.
The consistent position of the Board of Supervisors has been to
support efforts to reduce violence in our society and to ban or
regulate the manufacture, sale and use of weapons that have no
possible use except to kill human beings .
It therefore appears appropriate to take this action in support of
Senator Feinstein' s efforts to maintain the existing ban on
military-style assault weapons .

Dear Senator Feinstein:
On behalf of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, I am
pleased to advise you that we support the ban on assault weapons
that was enacted last year under your leadership and oppose any
efforts to repeal or weaken the ban.
The 101 California Street massacre should have taught all of us
that assault weapons exist solely to kill people. Such weapons
have no legitimate purpose in regard to hunting or any other legal
activity of which we are aware. As our society becomes ever more
violent, it is essential that we take steps to curb the
availability of these types of weapons of mass destruction.
We support your efforts to maintain the ban on military-style
assault weapons .
Very truly yours,
