BACKGROUND: Attached is a memo from CSAC quoting a letter from Senator Feinstein asking for the support of elected officials to continue the ban on military-style assault weapons and oppose any efforts to overturn that ban. The consistent position of the Board of Supervisors has been to support efforts to reduce violence in our society and to ban or regulate the manufacture, sale and use of weapons that have no possible use except to kill human beings . It therefore appears appropriate to take this action in support of Senator Feinstein' s efforts to maintain the existing ban on military-style assault weapons . The 101 California Street massacre should have taught all of us that assault weapons exist solely to kill people. Such weapons have no legitimate purpose in regard to hunting or any other legal activity of which we are aware. As our society becomes ever more violent, it is essential that we take steps to curb the availability of these types of weapons of mass destruction. We support your efforts to maintain the ban on military-style assault weapons .
