SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
IN THE MATTER OF:
PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF RESOLUTION NO. 95/135
APRIL 3-9, 1995 AS
"PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK"
IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
WHEREAS, the California State Department of Health Services has declared the week of April 3-9, 1995, as "Public
Health Week" and is joining with county and city health departments, community-based organizations and primary care
clinics in coordinating and promoting public health activities during the week; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the week is to provide public recognition and informational opportunities about
accomplishments and successful preventive public health programs; and
WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Health Services Department, in partnership with community-based organizations,
residents' advisory boards and local residents, is working to reduce the incidence of preventable, life-threatening disease
through community outreach, education and prevention activities; and
WHEREAS, the Public and Environmental Health Advisory Board has advised the Board of Supervisors that the priority
public health areas are chronic disease, AIDS, substance abuse, unintentional injury and violence, perinatal health and
family and adolescent health issues; and
WHEREAS, a number of current initiatives on the state and federal level appear to compromise significant steps taken
to address these priority areas; and
WHEREAS, the residents of Contra Costa County represent diverse cultural and ethnic populations with a wide range
of public health needs; and
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County has been a leader in embracing pioneering, innovative, multi-cultural, multi-
disciplinary public health services and in focusing the attention of the community on public health issues;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA
RESOLVED THAT:
The week of April 3-9, 1995 is PROCLAIMED "Public Health Week: throughout Contra Costa County.
