SUBJECT: Acknowledge Donations To the "House The Homeless" Program
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Acknowledge community donations in the amount of $19,935 to the
"House the Homeless" program.
BACKGROUND:
In November, 1994 , the "Help the Homeless For the Holidays"
campaign was established to raise funds from the community to
enable homeless persons to be sheltered who were beyond the
capacity of County government resources .
We sought the cooperation and generosity of individual citizens,
private non-profit organizations, churches, private businesses
and other local governments to finance additional beds and food
in the shelters for a four-month period from December 1, 1994
through March 31, 1995 .
❑ A bank account was established at the Martinez branch
of Wells Fargo Bank.
❑ Individually addressed• letters were sent to
organizations throughout the County.
❑ The Contra Costa Times created and published a series
of advertisements which they donated.
As a result, $19, 935 was raised which provided nearly 1,000
additional shelter nights .for those County residents who had no
place .of their own.
