Why not take over Los Medanos Hospital and make it into the new county hospital, and have satellites at Brookside and Mt. Diablo? This seems like an obvious solution, and far less expensive than building a new hospital. Sincerely yours, M.R. New urger, M.D. MN/in RECEDE® C/ JUN 51994 CLERKCBONTRAC OS7A CO.'SORS 1161 Leisure Lane No. 7 Walnut Creek, CA 94595 15 June 1991 - -- RECEIVED Honorable Tom Powers, Chair& Members Board of Supervisors 1 1994 Greetings:RE:County Hospital et al CLE COTRACOS ACoisoas The continuing debate over the rebuilding of the County Hospital in Martinez may serve some political agendas but in the end will not provide care for patients, contain health Gare costs nor serve the public interest in the issue. The Board's recent decision to go forward with the creation of a new hospital was, in my vier the correct action, for at least the following reasons: 1. A higher quality of care will be available to patients in a hospital that includes an intern/residency program than would generally be the case in a hospital that does not have a "house" staff. 2. Costs can be better contained in a hospital in which control. is exercized by a staff dedicated to quality care in a cost effective manner 3. Many patient care needs can be tended to in an outpatent setting. Cost effective, Integrated arrangements can be made to provide such services in local areas, reasonably availble to those who seek care from the County Services. Hospitals have closed throughout the state and nation because of major changes in the providing of patient care. These changes include but are not limited to shortened "in-hospital" stays, hi-tech equipment which aids in diagnosis and treatment and major changes in 'how" to care for in nospital patients. I assert the County obligation to those who look to it for health care services is to ensure high quality care. To the taxpayers, the lowest possible cost consistent with good care. I further assert these goals can be achieved through a facility owned by the County and operate OW a Staff that is dedicated to achieving such goals.. 11 A. B. McNabney
