HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06211994 - 1.23 l, � 3 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Honoring ) TOM HANKS as an Outstanding Former ) RESOLUTION NO. 941322 Resident of Contra Costa County ) WHEREAS, Tom Hanks is known and loved by millions as the star of such films as "Splash," "Big, " "A League of Their Own," and "Philadelphia;" and WHEREAS, residents of Contra Costa, however, have a special reason to identify with this megastar -- he was born in Concord and lived as a child in Pleasant Hill; and WHEREAS, not often does a native of Contra Costa gain the notoriety of Tom Hanks, and this year, he was acknowledged with the highest honor an actor can receive, the Academy Award for' Best Actor,for his work in "Philadelphia;" and WHEREAS, Tom Hanks was able to heighten awareness and gain acceptance for AIDS victims from his outstanding portrayal of a gay lawyer stricken with AIDS and his fight for justice and dignity. For the first time, AIDS and the discrimination that results from it was addressed in a major motion picture in an honest and accurate manner; and WHEREAS, we are fortunate Tom Hanks was able to utilize his tremendous talent to confront this human epidemic and are extremely proud to call him one of our own. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors honors TOM HANKS as an outstanding former resident of Contra Costa County; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we extend our heartfelt congratulations to him for winning the Academy Award and wish him continued success and fu fillment with his career.
