as DR. THOMAS OLWIN DAY in ) RESOLUTION NO. 9413M
Contra Costa County )
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas Olwin has practiced medicine in Contra Costa County since 1957 and
has worked tirelessly to relieve suffering and to reduce disability and death from heart disease,
stroke, and related disorders; and
WHEREAS, in 1962 and 1963, Dr. Olwin served as President of Medical Staff at Kaiser
Permanente Medical Center in Walnut Creek and has continually earned the esteem and respect
of his fellow physicians for his expertise in cardiology as well as his gentle warmth and caring;
and
WHEREAS, from 1968 to 1974, Dr. Olwin served on the Board of Directors of the American
Heart Association in Contra Costa County and further served as President in 1970-71, as well
as Chairman at various intervals of a number of committees including Programs, Research,
Long-Range Planning, and the Bay Area Research Committee; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Olwin is widely regarded as a teacher of considerable excellence and has been
called upon to direct and/or serve on the faculty of numerous postgraduate courses for nurses
both under the auspices of the American Heart Association and Kaiser Permanente Medical
Center; and
WHEREAS, in 1985 Dr. Olwin was instrumental in the planning, design, and establishment of
the Cardiac Care Unit and has additionally served as Medical Director of the post-heart attack
patient education classes at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Olwin has earned the admiration and respect of countless nurses through his
leadership in participating in the daily Cardiac Care Unit nursing rounds to further develop their
day-to-day knowledge at the hospital; and
WHEREAS, on June 16, the Contra Costa County Office of the American Heart Association will
recognize Dr. Thomas Olwin as a "Heart of Gold" recipient at a dinner paying tribute to his
years of devoted service to the American Heart Association, his patients, and the doctors and
nurses he has worked with over a long and continuing career of distinction.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares June 16, 1994,
as DR. THOMAS OLWIN DAY in Contra Costa County and gratefully acknowledges his
devotion and contributions to improving the quality of life and health in our county.
PASSED AND ADOPTED ON June 14, 1994, by a unanimous vote of the Board members
resent.—
