Declaring May 1 - May 7, 1994
as "Cinco de Mayo Week" in
Contra Costa County
7V1,715 5, 5, on May 5, 1862, the Army of Mexico met, engaged in conflict and
defeated French forces at the Battle of Puebla; and
ZU ,45, though outnumbered and by comparison untrained, the Mexican troops
exhibited great courage and self-sacrifice to successfully repeal the invasion of their land by
foreign forces; and
7 WERS,4s, this victory exemplifies the determination and perseverance embodied in
the proud cultural history of people of Mexican origin; and
?oV,FR5 S, Cinco de Mayo is recognized as a day which symbolizes the opposition of
free people to attempts at tyranny and demonstrates the triumph of Freedom over oppression; and
concerned citizens of Mexican ancestry and other Hispanic organizations
will be sponsoring and attending observances dedicated to the spirit of the eent.
