Authorize payment of $8,000 to Sheriff Marine Patrol from Game Protection Fund for repair of two boats. FISCAL IMPACT There is over $36,000 budgeted in the Game Protection Fund for FY 93/94. To date $10,000 has been allocated to the California Waterfowl Association. Approval of this request, would leave the Fund with a balance of $18,110 for additional expenditures in FY 1993/94. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S): The Game Protection Fund consists of fine revenues from State Fish and Game Code violations. According to the State Fish and Game Code, these monies are-to be spent on a variety of purposes, including protection of fish and wildlife. The Sheriffs Marine Patrol in conjunction with the State Department of Fish ;and Game provide this protection through enforcement of the Fish and Game code. The Patrol's activities also increase the revenue flow to the Fund. Recognizing the importance of State Fish and Game Codes, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution in April 1985 making the Sheriff the official Fish and Game Warden for the County and making Game Protection Fund expenditures on the Marine Patrol formal Board policy. The Marine Patrol has frequently received funding from this source in prior years. Mitosinka& Rick Morgan Community Development BY DEPUTY The Sheriffs Marine Patrol Unit is requesting $8,000 of Game Protection Funds for repair of their boats used for enforcement of the Fish and Game Code. Two of the boats are dysfunctional due to equipment problems. As a result, the Marine Patrol will have inadequate coverage during peak boating season and insufficient backup if current operating boats are broken. Repairs are quicker and less costly than buying new boats. County Administrator and Water Committee staff have reviewed the request and are recommending approval. The ad hoc Fish and Wildlife Committee has also reviewed the request, but made no formal recommendation. The request was received last December. Board action at this time would be much appreciated, in order to meet the Patrol's busiest period which begins in May. 2
