In the Matter of Proclaiming )
April, 1994 as Earthquake ) RESOLUTION NO. 94/197
Preparedness Month )
WHEREAS, California lies within the so-called Pacific "ring of
fire", the area within which most of the world's devastating
earthquakes occur, and
WHEREAS, so far in this century California has experienced
thirteen severe earthquakes including San Francisco in 1906,
Santa Barbara in 1925, Long Beach in 1933, Imperial Valley in
1940, Tehachapi in 1952, Eureka in 1954, Santa Rosa in 1969, San
Fernando in 1971, Oroville in 1975, Coalinga in 1983 , Whittier
Narrows in 1987, Loma Prieta in 1989 and Northridge in 1994, and
WHEREAS, all earthquakes which have occurred in California in
this century have caused over 1100 deaths, thousands of injuries
and billions of dollars of property ,damage, and
WHEREAS, seismologists have warned that a major earthquake on the
Hayward Fault, which traverses the western part of Contra Costa
County, poses one of the greatest hazards to lives and property
in the nation and could occur at any time, causing up to 4500
deaths, 13 , 000 persons requiring hospitalization, 135, 000 other
injuries and tens of billions of dollars worth of property
damage, and
WHEREAS, other earthquake faults in the San Francisco Bay Area
also pose threats to Contra Costa County, and
WHEREAS, the California State Legislature has proclaimed the
month of April as California Earthquake Preparedness Month,
IT IS HEREBY BY THIS BOARD RESOLVED that the month of April is
proclaimed as Earthquake Preparedness Month in Contra Costa
County and all county residents are urged to prepare themselves
and their families by developing an emergency plan, including the
storage of food, water, flashlights, portable radios, batteries,
first aid supplies and other items which will be needed to cope
with the aftermath of a major earthquake.
