Bitten, Acting Director of Personnel Costa CosBy: Teresa Boney, Personnel Analyst l + DATE: March 15, 1994 County SUBJECT: Declaring March 1 through March 31 1994 as "Women's History Month" in Contra Costa County SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION The Women Managers of Contra Costa County ask you to recognize March as Women's History Month in our County. BACKGROUND Since 1910, March 8th has, been observed as International Women's Day by people around the world. That is why March was chosen to be National Women's History Month in the united States. Traditionally,'the teaching of history focused on the military, political and economic events and leaders. However, this traditional approach has not always addressed the question of "What were the women doing"? The Women's History Programs set out to answer this question and fill in some important gaps. In addition to the activities of leaders in the public sphere, women's history also looks at the private sphere and at the experience and contributions of women for all walks of like. It identifies women who have made a contribution, who have emerged as community leaders to address unmet needs, to work for the common good and social justice.
