SUBJECT: Apple Maggot Control Ordinance
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
Introduce, waive reading, and fix July 201 1993 for adoption of
Apple Maggot Control Ordinance.
BACKGROUND
Because of budget constraints the California Department of Food and
Agriculture (CDFA) has been forced to eliminate funding for the
apple maggot trapping program. The Director of CDFA has also
signed a notice of repeal for the apple maggot interior quarantine.
In order to meet certification requirements of other countries and
states, an industry funded program has been developed. We have
been advised by CDFA that with the adoption of the Apple Maggot
Control Ordinance the required trapping level to meet certification
requirements is greatly reduced.
Our apple industry in Contra Costa is very significant. Over seven
million dollars were generated in 1992 by this relatively young
industry, and the acreage is rapidly increasing. For the survival
of this industry it is critical that this ordinance be implemented.
If growers cannot meet certification requirements of other
countries and states, the value of the crop is reduced
substantially.
