Contra TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Costa FROM: Transportation Committee M County DATE: May 17, 1993 SUBJECT: Report on Draft Skateboard Ordinance SPECIFIC REQUEST(8) OR RECOMMENDATIONS) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATIONS Approve, in concept, an ordinance regulating the use of skateboards in commercial districts (see Exhibit A) ; Consider the need for including toy vehicles in the skateboard ordinance; Refer the Board's comments on the ordinance to County Counsel; and Direct County Counsel to report back to the Board with a final ordinance for adoption. FISCAL IMPACT Minimal. The initial impact of the ordinance may increase calls to the Sheriff for assistance. Such calls to the Sheriff will decrease once skateboarders become aware of the existence of the ordinance. BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS The Transportation Committee reviewed a draft skateboard ordinance prepared by County Counsel at the request of Supervisor Bishop. The Committee deleted any reference to bicycles and roller. skates citing the need to focus on equipment used strictly for recreation. The Committee refers to the Board whether there is a need to include toy vehicles in the ordinance. ' SUPV. Within any district areas zoned for coatmaercial I use, it shall be unlawful for any person upon: i (1) a skateboard -or riding upon or by mans of any coaster, skateboard, toy vehicle or similar device to go up on any highway, roadway, or upon any sidewalk or paved surface located in any such commercial area.
