HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05181993 - S.2 TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ?` Contra c FROM: Costa Supervisor Tom Torlakson oQ County DATE: May 18, 1993 SUBJECT: CO MISSION REDMOND O'COLONIES AS OFFICIAL COUNTY CRIER OF CONTRA OSTA SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Commission Redmond O'Colonies as Official County Crier of Contra Costa serving as ambassador of good will for Contra Costa County. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. This commission does not include a salary. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Although town criers are sometimes thought of as modern day Wee Willie Winkies, the tradition of Town Crying was actually first mentioned in the Doomsday Book, Circa 1066 . At present, there are approximately 350 "Brothers & Sisters of the Bell" throughout the world. Collectively, they are known as "clangor of Criers" and they bring color, tradition and pageantry to our communities, clients and events. This ancient, and honorable position requires Criers to carry no political affiliations . According to the American Association of Town , Criers, this commission would create history--Contra Costa would be the first county in the United States of America with a County Crier. Mr. O'Colonies is presently the Town Crier for the City of Martinez and can serve concurrently as the County Crier. r The County Crier will be available for civic events and will represent the county at Town Crier competitions. Mr. O'Colonies participated in the Contra Costa Tea Party on May 5. He played a ;key role in calling media attention to the event and raising public awareness . Mr. O'Colonies is the current holder of the 4Abraham Lincoln award as America' s best Town,''' Crier. He will participate in the Town Criers,.. competition in Toronto Canada in June for the world championships . NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CON- TRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, does hereby commission Redmond O'Colonies as the Official County Crier of Contra Costa. The Board commends Mr. O'Colonies for his dedicated service to the community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors extends it's heartiest and warmest congratulations to Mr. Redmond on his outstanding performance in past Town Criers competition extends good luck and best wishes in the'Town Criers World Championships in Toronto, Canada. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 18th Day of May, 1993.
