HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04271993 - S.2 �n �oaha�o��u(�e�iao� WM840 woda wow+ 92" V/ W ;% IN THE MATTER OF ] RESOLUTION No. 93/221 Recognizing the need] to adequately fund ] Commmunity Colleges ] WHEREAS, Contra Costa College in West Contra Costa County, Diablo Valley College in Central Contra Costa, Los Medanos College in East Contra Costa and the Center for Higher Education in the San Ramon Valley educate 39, 000 Contra Costa residents each semester; and WHEREAS, these institutions provide classes and programs necessary to equip residents of Contra Costa County with skills they will need to secure jobs, advance careers and improve opportunities; and WHEREAS, the skills and knowledge that students have acquired at Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College, Los Medanos College and the Center for Higher Education have added immensely to the prosperity and well being of Contra Costa County; and WHEREAS, in number of transfers to four-year colleges, the Contra Costa Community College District annually places among the top five community college districts in the state, and is the starting point for many students pursuing bachelor degrees; and WHEREAS, through nursing, paramedic and fire and police protection instruction, and other fields, the Contra Costa Community College District and its institutions have helped save many lives in Contra Costa County and contributed to the physical health of everyone; and WHEREAS, through art, music and cultural programs, through outreach classes at -the high schools, and special programs for high school students and the elderly, Contra Costa, Diablo Valley and Los Medanos Colleges and the Center for Higher education, have greatly enriched the quality of life in Contra Costa County; and WHEREAS, these colleges and the Center for Higher Education have since their inception provided the widest access to low-income and minority residents, and for decades have served as the main road to higher education; and WHEREAS, recent fee increases are making it difficult if not impossible for many students to attend Contra Costa, Diablo Valley and Los Medanos Colleges and the Center for Higher Education; and WHEREAS, despite program and staff cutbacks, the colleges and the Center for Higher Education are confronted with a revenue reduction that will discourage thousands from attending a community college; and WHEREAS, the brunt of the program reductions will fall heaviest on the low income, the unemployed and the people in need of job training; and WHEREAS, the economy of Contra Costa County will suffer if its residents are denied educational opportunities and training. NOW, therefore be it resolved that the County of Contra Costa supports the efforts of the Contra Costa Community College District and its institutions to secure adequate funding for their classes and programs; and THAT the County of Contra Costa supports the retention of the half cent sales tax to fund community college programs and other worthwhile public programs; and THAT the County of Contra Costa opposed further fee increases at all community colleges and supports open access for all resident; and THAT the County of Contra Costa calls for repeal of the differential fee that has discouraged local residents form continuing their education at community colleges . PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 27th day of April, 1993 .
