SUBJECT: Adjournment In Honor Of The Memory Of The Reverend Ernest
Dargan, New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Pittsburg
IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the March 9, 1993 Board Meeting
of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is ADJOURNED in honor
of the memory of the Reverend Ernest Douglas Dargan, who established
the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Pittsburg, California.

Obituary of
THE REVEREND ERNEST DOULGAS DARGAN
"Why do we mourn departed friends , or shake at death' s alarm? Tis '
but the Voice that Jesus sends to call them to His arms . This is
just another Soldler going to get the Great Reward.
This is a world of sin , sorrow and death. No condition in Life Is '.
proof against the Irrmutable decree of God : As much as our hearts do
yearn for one more glimpse of his smiling face, which Is now filled
with God Amazing Grace: With God' s redeemed there is no death ; It ' s
only passing through the valley with Jesus to live forever more.
Rev . Dargan was the 7th son of ten children, born July 22, 1954 to
the parent of J .C. Dargan and the late Ella Mae Cooper-Dargan. He
was a devoted child and gave unselfishly of his love to his parents ,
who at an early age, knew he was "chosen". He was reared in church
and accepted the Lord at an early age and answered the call to the
Ministry at age 15. He was diligent in his study of God ' s Word and
accepted the challenge of Founder and Pastor of the New Bethel Missionary
Baptist Church , Lamar , South Carolina. Rev . Dargan often expressed
the love and support that his Mother gave him as a young man and often
stated how it made the difference.
Being a quiet and serious young man, he graduated from Spaulding High
School in the top ten of the class . He later attended and graduated
from the Morris College in Sumpter , S.C. , where he was President of
the Class and established the Knight ' s Social club and served , as
Assistant Dormitory Direcotr , Mr . Co-Ed , Most Active Student and the
Most Outstanding Student Leader. He was President of the—Student
Government and an Honor Student , listed in "Who ' s Who' s Among Students
in Universities and Colleges. He obtained his B.A. Degree -in History
stud!-ed at USC, Majoring in Education Administration and was chosen
as the 10th year class reunion speaker and was honored in the College ' s
Annual Book . He also received a M.A. Degree from the Morris University ,
Sunr`pter , $.C.
Reverend Dargan --t�1?ittsburg in 1978 , where he joined. True Light
Missionar aptist Church, �wh served as needed, later he united
with the Saint Mark Missionary Bap ist Church, under the leadership of
the hong b n, w ere he was elected as Assistant Pastor ,
and Under Rev. Dargan ' s leadership, he was instrumental in -
th purchase�ofy for the church and established the weekly
se for citizg and the food. give-away for the needy .
On May 29, 1987 , In the Cit o urg, there emerged one of the most
historical events of times. There at a of local residents , a
new fellowship was born, the NEW BETL�ML MISSI Y BAPTIST CHURCH OF
PITTSBURG, CALIFORNIA.
On June 9 , 1987 , New Beilhel gained all her rights and privlleges with
the powerful leadership of Rev. Dargan, by the mentorshlp of the
Dr . J .R. Richardson of San Franciso. Again, history repeated itself ,
with the members all on one accord, requesting that the honorable
Rev . F.D. Dargan, serve as Pastor and ,Founder . Needless to say that
Pastor Dargan accepted the new challenge and began to work as never
before. Another mentor was the First Baptist Church and Rev . J. Pender ,
who offered the use of any of the Church facilitles, such as the
baptism 0 1 for the new church.

As the Baby Church worshipped God and He "gave the increase" , Pastor
Dargan , being a man of vision , realized that a larger edifice was needed
and building plans were soon implemented and the search for land began.
Finally , Rev. Dargan met Gene Dolan and being inspired by God agreed on
the purchase of land. Rev. Dargan came before the church and after a
very powerful message, he asked his membership to trust God and on that
day the :mem•►bership raised $10,000 in a matter of minutes to launch the
building effort . On December 20, 1987 , celebration of the land breaking
for the newly acquired property.
Rev: Dargan had a special concern for young people and sought to teach
them the correct way . He was Supervisor for the Pittsburg Pre-School
Coordinating Council , Inc. , for over 12 years and was'-an active advocate
for young people . Having this concern and insight , he established an
active Junior' Deacon Board, training young men to love and serve the Lord,
both at Saint Mark and the New Bethel Baptist Church.
He was interested in the corrmunity he lived in and served and ran a
successful "grass-roots" operations for the City Council , campaign to
keep Lucky ' s Super Market in the Northern part of town, served as an
Officer for the Black Political Associatlon, member of the Pittsburg
Branch N.A.A.C.P. , a member of the Delta Democrats , the Young Democrats ,
the lnterdemonimational Ministerial Alliance, served on the Contra Costa
County grand Jury as Foreman pro-tem, appointed to the Selective Services
Board, a member of the Community Advisory Committee for the City of
Pittsburg, and was elected to the Democratic Central Corrrnittee , which
he served on until the present . He has received many, awards and
certificates , which include nomination for the Chamber' of Corrmerce
Citizen of the Year, the Martin Luther King Jr . , Humanitarian Award. He
performed many weddings , baptisms, funerals and led many to Christ through
his ministry and his love for the Word of God. This was shown in the
many ways he would beach people and his love of Sunday School .
In the Words of Rev. Dargan, "Things Happen" , but "He never failed us yet . "
He leaves to cherish his memory, his father , J.C. Dargan, Lamar , S.0- ,
4. brothers, Robert 'L. , oElizabeth New Jersey.; Daniel and David , Brooklyn
New York and J.C. Dargan of Lamar , S .C. ; 2 sisters, Mae Esther Dargan-
Willis and Rebecca D. Anderson of Pittsburg, Ca, ; 2 brothers- in- laws ,
Garnell Anderson of Pittsburg, Ca and Albert Willis of New York , preceding
him in death were his Mother , Ella Mae Cooper Dargan, James Luke, Henry
and Fannie Lee Dargan; Left also are his Church Family, community of
friends , a host of neices , nephews and other relatives .
