SUBJECT: COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PROGRAM: AGREEMENT WITH PROBATION DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: 1. AUTHORIZE the County Probation Officer to execute an agreement with the County Office of Education for the provision of probation services. The agreement would require the addition of a 20/40 deputy probation officer position dedicated to the Community Schools Program, the costs for which would be offset by fees charged to the County Office of Education. 2. ADOPT the personnel adjustment resolution adding one 20/40 deputy probation officer position to be funded directly from fees to be charged to the County Office of Education. FINANCIAL IMPACT: This agreement will result in a zero net county cost impact. BACKGROUND: The Probation Department has had an ongoing, in-kind relationship with the Community Schools Program (administered by the County Office of Education) for many years. This agreement proposes to accelerate referrals of pupils to the Program and when appropriate, designate those pupils as W&I Code Section 601 status offenders. The Probation Department would continue to monitor each pupil's progress in the Program and make recommendations on future disposition of each pupil. Since part of the Community Schools Program funding is based on the average daily attendance, the increased number of pupils referred to the Program will generate additional revenues which will be used to fund the part time deputy probation officer.
