Geyser, M.D. on His Induction Into the Liberty Union High School District Athletic Hall of Fame WHEREAS,induction ceremonies into the 1993 Liberty Union High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be held on March 27,1993,to honor special members of the community who have made valuable contributions to the Liberty High School athletic program and Harry A. Geyser, M.D., has been selected to receive this prestigious honor; WHEREAS,Dr.Harry Geyser and his lovely wife Violet came to Brentwood in 1940 and in 1941 began serving as the team physician; WHEREAS,in 1942,when World War II began,Dr.Geyser volunteered for service in the U.S.Army Medical Corps and was commissioned as Captain. He left the service and returned to Brentwood in 1946 to continue his practice. He was officially appointed by Superintendent E. G. Nash of the Liberty Union High School District as athletic physican. Dr. Geyser has loyally served Liberty High School for 29 years until his retirement in 1970. During these years as the team physician, Dr.Geyser was not just a doctor on call,but a loyal fan as well. He missed only one home football game in all 29 years of service; WHEREAS,Dr. Geyser was born April 10, 1903, in Austin, Minnesota. He spent his early years in Russia,Poland and Germany. He attended the College of the City of New York and received his AB degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Michigan. In 1934,he received his Medical Degree from the University of St Andrews in Scotland; WHEREAS,Dr.Geyser has been honored for his many years of outstanding service to youth by such organizations as the Lions Club and the Brentwood Union School PTA. In 1971, the Liberty Union High School District honored him for his loyal and dedicated service to the high school. In 1973, the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce selected him Citizen of the Year. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby honors Dr.Harry A. Geyser for his dedicated service to the young people of Liberty High School as team physcian and as a generous and caring adult. The Board respectfully acknowledges his induction into the LUHSD Athletic Hall of Fame. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 23rd day of March, 1993. She was First Team Foothill Athletic League in three sports during her career at Liberty. She was First Team All-FAL in volleyball in 1984 as well as being selected Co-Most Valuable Player. She also made the All-Lesher Team that year. She played two years of varsity volleyball; WHEREAS,she played varsity softball and was All-FAL First Team selection in 1985,and she was her team's Most Valuable Player with a .413 batting average; WHEREAS, Debbie played varsity basketball all four years at Liberty and was the Most Valuable Player in 1983, 1984,and 1985. She was First Team All-FAL in 1983, 1984 and 1985. In 1984,she was selected as the Co-most Valuable Player of the FAL and in 1985 she was the FAL's Most Valuable Player. She was selected to the All-Lesher Team in 1983, 1984 and was Player of the Year in 1985. She was selected All-East Bay in 1983, 1984,and was honored as the All-East Bay Player of the Year in 1985. She was also chosen to the All-Northern California Team in 1984 and 1985; WHEREAS,Debbie played basketball at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. There she earned First Team Northern California honors in 1985 and was elected the First Team All State Team in 1986. She was also chosen Delta College's Most Valuable Player in 1986; WHEREAS, she was Scholar Athlete at Liberty in 1985 and Female Athlete of the Year. WHEREAS, in 1986,Debbie was selected the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame winner for her basketball feats at San Joaquin Delta College. WHEREAS, she attended the University of the Pacific on an athletic scholarship to play basketball where she excelled during the 1987 season; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby honors Debbie Geyser for her outstanding athletic career at LibertyHigh School and in college and respectfully acknowledges her induction into the LUHSD Athletic Hall of Fame. He was one of the most versatile and outstanding athletes to ever play at Liberty High School. He lettered in four and was outstanding in three varsity sports; WHEREAS,Jack earned his football letters in 1955 and 1956. Jack was a fine punter,defensive player, passer, and a clever ball-handling quarterback; He was selected First Team All-EBAL in 1956. WHEREAS, Jack also played basketball earning his letter in 1957. He was selected to the First Team All-EBAL that season. He earned his letter as a track man in 1957 as a high jumper who consistently jumped 5'8". He was also an outstanding swimmer,earning varsity swimming letters in 1955, 1956 and 1957. He was Liberty's Most Valuable Swimmer in 1957 and selected Team Captain. WHEREAS,Jack was an outstanding student leader while in high school. He was Freshman Class President in 1953-54, Sophomore Student Council Representative in 1954-55, Liberty Student Body Vice President in 1955-56, and Commissioner for Athletics in 1956-57. He was also an honor student for all four years, 1953-1957; WHEREAS, after graduating from Liberty in 1957, Jack went to Eastern Washington College in Cheney, Washington,where he lettered in varsity football for four years. WHEREAS,when Jack graduated from college with a BA degree in 1962,he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S.Army. After his military service,Jack became a teacher with the Brentwood Unified School District in 1967. He became Delta Recreation Director in 1967 until 1971. He also coached the Brentwood Swim Club from 1968 until 1977. He served as football coach and as swim coach at Liberty High School for ten years. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby commends Jack England for his outstanding athletic and academic career at Liberty Union High School and in college and for his dedicated service to the high school as a coach and to his community as an educator and civic leader and respectfully acknowledges his induction into the LUHSD Athletic Hall of Fame. PHIL BATCHEL R,Clerk f t e Board of Su sorsa unty istrator By: eputy Introduced by: SUPERVISOR TOM TORLAKSON,District Five Chair of the Board of Supervisors 1 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 9 3/14 4 Honoring the 1965 Varsity Football Team on Their Induction Into the Liberty Union High School Athletic Hall of Fame WHEREAS,induction ceremonies into the 1993 Liberty Union High School District Athletic Hall of Fame will be held on March 27,1993,honoring special members of the community who have made valuable contributions to the Liberty High School athletic program,and the 1965 Varsity Football Team has been selected to receive this prestigious honor; WHEREAS,on November 12, 1965, the 1965 Liberty Lions football team closed their perfect sesaon by defeating the Albany High School Cougars by 59-7--becoming the first undefeated and untied football team in Liberty's history. WHEREAS,this win gave Liberty a two-game league lead and its first varsity football EBAL championship in ten years; WHEREAS,"Quality,not Quantity,"was this team's motto,because Liberty had fewer players (24)on its roster than any other team in the EBAL. WHEREAS,this is a dedicated team that was not just lucky--they made their breaks and capitalized on them. They were a fine offensive team which was well balanced by also having an excellent defense team. They are the only undefeated and untied football tam in the 57-year Liberty football history; WHEREAS,in 1965,this Liberty team dominated the All-League Teams with six first team selections and eight second team selections. Floyd Reese and Steve Dal Porto were selected to the Contra Costa All-Star Game. Floyd was also chosen to play in the North-South High School Shrine Football Game at the Los Angeles Coliseum; WHEREAS,the following is the team's season record: Liberty- 14 Pacifica - 12 Liberty-20 St.Elizabeth-19 Liberty-27 Livermore- 14 Liberty-25 St. Vincents-0 Liberty- 13 Granada-0 Liberty-21 John Swett-0 Liberty- 13 Salesian-9 Liberty- 14 Amador-6 Liberty-59 Albany-7 Total: Liberty-209 Opponents-67 9-0-0 Overall Wins; 7-0-0 League Wins NOW,THEREFORE,IT BE RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby honors the 1965 Varsity Football Team for their outstanding undefeated football season and and respectfully acknowledges their induction into the LUHSD Athletic Hall of Fame. He was an active and integral participant in all the sports then offered. He lettered four years in varsity football and was on the championship team of 1938. He was the Most Valuable Player on the football team in 1939; WHEREAS, he lettered four years in basketball and played on the championship team of 1940. He lettered four years in baseball where he was an outstanding pitcher. He played on the 1939 championship team. He also earned a varsity letter as a trackman where he was a weightman. He won First Place in the discus at the St. Helena Invitational; WHEREAS,Bill went on to play basketball and and football at St.Mary's College in Moraga after being recruited by St. Mary's, Santa Clara and Washington; WHEREAS, he returned to his beloved Byron and became a farmer--he was first and foremost a farmer for the greater part of his life. He always felt a strong commitment to serve his community and was involved in many organizations and committees. He served on the Board of Education for the Byron School District from 1957-1977 serving as President several times. In recognition of his dedicated service to the school district and his strong interest in young people,in 1977,the new administration building was named the William Bunn Administration Building in his honor. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,the Board of Supervisors hereby honors William"Bill" Bunn for outstanding athletic career at Liberty Union High School and for dedicated service to the community. During his sophomore season,he was All-Tourney at the Pinole Valley Spartan Holiday Classic,All-EBAL Second Team,and Liberty's most Valuable Player. As a Junior,he was All-Tourney at th UC Nisbet Tournament and the Yuba City Holiday Invitational. He was All EBAL First Team, Liberty's Most Valuable Player and Captain Award recipient. As a Senior,he was selected All-Tourney at the Yuba City Holiday Invitational and the Top of the Bay Classic,selectedCaptain by his teammates, was All-EBAL First Team,and Liberty's Most Valuable Player.He was also selected by unanimous choice to the All East Bay Team and selected to the Sunkist All-American Team (Honorable Mention). He was slelected All-District 7(8 Western States by the High School Basketball yearbook and the All-State Basketball Team and played in the North-South game. He is the only Liberty player ever to be so recognized; WHEREAS,when Mike graduated from Liberty,he received approximately 85 college offers,choosing St.Mary's College in Moraga; WHEREAS,his college career was no less sensational than his high school career. As a Freshman,he was chosen All- Northern California First Team,All-WCAC First Team,St.Mary's Most Valuable Player and selected Captain by his teammates. As a Sophomore,he was All-North Cal Second Team,UPI All-West Coast Team(Honorble Mention),WCAC Player of the Week, All-WCAC Honorable Mention,and St.Mary's Most Valuable Player. During his Junior season,he was chosen the Most Valuable Player at the Cal-Poly Aggie Tourney,was an All-WCAC(Honorable Mention),and All-North-Cal Second Team choice again. During his Senior season,he was chosen All-Nor Cal Second Team and All-WCAC Second Team. WHEREAS,in 1975,Mike was drafted by the 1975 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors in the 8th round. He was also drafted by the ABA Champion Kentucky Colonels in the 6th round. He was the only college player drafted by both professional champions in that year. In 1975,Mike made the Baltimore Claws roster,but the team was dropped by league four days before the opening game for lack of operating funds. In 1975,Mike was one of the last players cut by the Warriors after an excellent summer camp and pre-season games. WHEREAS,in 1977,Mike played pro ball for the San Miguel Corp.in the Philippines where he averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds. WHEREAS,he graduated from St.Mary's College with a BA Degree in US History and a minor in Physical Education; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors hereby honors Mike Rozenski for his outstanding athletic career at Liberty Union High School,in college and in the pros. He played and lettered in football, basketball, track, baseball and tennis. He played on championship teams in football,basketball,and track. He was active as Senior Class President and a member of the Block"L"Society. He was a member of the LUHS Band and Orchestra. Bob was a Life Member of the California Scholastic Federation and was the Scholarship Cup winner his senior year. He was Valedic- torian for the Class of 1942; WHEREAS, after graduating from high shcool, Bob went to UC-Berkeley where he excelled in football,track and basketball as a freshman in 1942-43. His college career was interrupted by World War II and he went into the U.S. Naval Aviation Cadet Program; WHEREAS,Bob was discharged from the service in May 1945 and returned to UC-Berkeley to finish his education. He again played football and ran on the track team. He played on the Conference Champion team in the Rose Bowl against Northwestern on January 1, 1949. This was Cal's first Rose Bowl team since the 1938 team. In track,Bob competed during the 1947, 1948,and 1949 seasons in the high and low hurdles, javelin, and the relay team; WHEREAS, while at Cal, Bob served on President Sproul's Althletic Advisory Board. He was President and member of the Big "C"--a three year letterman, he was given the Blanket Award. He was a member of the Order of the Golden Bears Honor Society and the Skull and Keys Honor Society as well as the Winged Helmet Honor Society. He graduated from University of California in 1949 with honors with a 3.5 in Industrial Engineering. He was student speaker at the commencement exercises; WHEREAS,Bob was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams and received inquiries from the New York Giants,Buffalo Bills,and the New York Yankees football teams choosing instead to return home to become a cattle rancher and community leader. He is a Past President of the Brentwood Lions Club and served on the Oakley Union School District Board of Trustees for 19 years. He has served on at least ten boards of directors or committees in the past years. In 1958,Bob was named Contra Costa County's Outstanding Young Farmer by the Contra Costa Junior Chamber of Commerce District; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby honors Bob Dal Porto for his outstanding performance as an all-around athlete and scholar while a student at Liberty Union High School and at UC-Berkeley and commends him for his dedicated service to the community as a civic leader and respectfully acknowledges his induction into the LUHSD Athletic Hall of Fame.
