" BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Barry W. Tyler of the Cyclery. Group brought several ideas to my attention regarding bikes for children and families in need. The Cyclery Group has been recognized in the past for its outstanding program donating bikes to Nicaragua. After the tremendous problems and needs revealed in the recent crisis in Los Angeles, Mr. Tyler called and suggested we do something with bikes in our own area. The proposed bike repair program. could be operated in conjunction with the police departments who have unclaimed bikes and the public who may wish to donate used bikes to this effort. Repaired bikes would be redistributed after a thorough repair and safety check to deserving high risk and disadvantaged youth. Mr. Tyler is interested in providing specialized instruction to 'inmates in bike repair and maintenance. Other volunteers could assist in expanding the excellent concept displayed through the "Santa's Workshop" program last year.
