The drive is in coordination with the Contra Costa Food Bank, and all food collected will be distributed directly to needy Contra Costa citizens. The letter carriers have had an in-house food drive for the past four years at their post office. However, when they found out that the Food Bank's requests for assistance are up 40 percent and donations are down 13 percent, they decided to increase their efforts to fight hunger by collecting food door-to-door as they deliver the mail on their daily routes. The carriers have also committed to conduct the drive without any extra cost to the Postal Service or its customers. The Board of Supervisors commends the Moraga and Orinda Letter Carriers and Postmaster Betty Hicks for their compassion and willingness to tackle this very serious problem, and we extend our best wishes for much success in -their efforts to help fight hunger in Contra Costa County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors honors the MORAGA and ORINDA TETTER CARRIERS on the occasion of their 1st Annual Food Drive.
