HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05191992 - 1.14 TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Contra FROM: Gary Villalba ;• Costa County Veteran Service Officer County DATE: May 12, 1992 SUBJECT: MEMORIAL DAY, 1992 SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)6 BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RESOLUTION NO. 92/ 326 WHEREAS, Memorial Day had its beginnings in 1866 when memorial associations were formed for the purpose of caring for the graves of soldiers who died during the Civil War; and WHEREAS, Memorial Day has evolved into a national holiday weekend , whereby Americans, our elected officials and veteran service organizations celebrate with patriotic and memorial ceremonies at monuments and cemeteries throughout this great nation and here in Contra Costa County; and WHEREAS, our citizens will pay tribute to over one million American men and women who gave their lives in service to our country and in defense of our precious freedoms , and will honor the many who were prepared to do the same; and WHEREAS, we also honor the service and sacrifice of our disabled veterans and our POW/MIA' s who we shall never forget; and WHEREAS, on Memorial Day we acknowledge the sacrifice and sorrow of parents who lost sons or daughters, spouses who lost their partners in life, and children who may have lost a parent due to the cruelty of war; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY hereby urges all county residents to memorialize the valor and supreme sacrifice of our veterans and those who gave their lives so that we may live' in freedom.
