HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04211992 - 1.31 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY IN THE MATTER OF PROMOTING RESOLUTION NO. 92/237 The Week of April 26 - May 2, 1992 as: "Tobacco Awareness Week" Declare April 26 - May 2, 1992 'Tobacco Awareness Week"in Contra Costa County: WHEREAS every year over 434,000 smokers die of smoking related illnesses; and WHEREAS every year 53,000 non-smokers die of cancer and heart disease caused by exposure to involuntary smoke; and WHEREAS every year over 1,300 people die in cigarette ignited fires; and WHEREAS one in five Californians over 20 smoke; and WHEREAS every day another 3,000 children begin using tobacco products; and WHEREAS in 1985, 839 Contra Costa County residents died prematurely of smoking related illness at a cost of$87.5 million in health care costs; and WHEREAS nicotine in cigarettes and chewing tobacco is as addictive as heroin and cocaine; and WHEREAS the tobacco industry spends over$3.27 billion each year on advertising and promotion to encourage the use of tobacco products; and WHEREAS minors are able to purchase tobacco from vending machines 100% of the time; and WHEREAS the Contra Costa County Tobacco Prevention Coalition, in conjunction with the California State Legislature, has set a goal of reducing tobacco consumption by 75%by the. year 2000; and WHEREAS every death caused by the use of tobacco products is a preventable death; NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA, CALIFORNIA hereby proclaims April 26 - May 2, 1992 as "Contra Costa County Tobacco Awareness Week" and ENCOURAGES Contra Costa County residents to take action to protect themselves and others from the ill effects of tobacco use. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this day in April, 1992. I hereby certify that this is a true and correct copy of an order entered on the minutes of said Board of Supervisors on the date aforesaid.
