"' _ County DATE: February 27, 1992 SUBJECT: "HIRE AN OLDER WORKER WEEK" SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATIONS) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDATION To declare the week of March 8-14, 1992, as "HIRE AN OLDER WORKER WEEK" in Contra Costa County, to remind the business community that older workers are one of our community's most valuable resources, and to encourage all businesses in the county to give equal opportunity to individuals age 55 or older when filling job openings. Until recently, many older workers were forced to retire and live a sedentary life. Today, an increasingly healthy and skilled senior community is available as a valuable pool of potential .employees. During Older Worker Week, the County is asked to urge employers to hire older workers and to publicize this through the press. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT None. REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND The governor has declared March 8-14, 1992, as "Hire the Older Worker Week" in California (copy of proclamation attached) , and as a joint endeavor the Contra Costa County Private Industry Council (PIC) , the County Social Service Department, the County Office on Aging and local offices of the California Employment Development Department encourage the Board of Supervisors to support this effort. It is essential that employers know of the avail- ability of an untapped pool of mature workers who want to work and who take pride in their job performance. Contrary to the myth that older workers are slow learners who are unable to keep pace in today's workplace, employers have discovered that older workers are reliable, stable employees who bring to the job a strong work ethic and a high level of employer loyalty. war iQ ^i' w_1-' ;,.. .,,. .r... a ' wu'•<,..Ea ir•`v3.f ?":_e: ?=i-5+`i.*7''..
